An architect with degrees from Princeton University, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and most recently the Italian Laurea in Architettura from Rome’s Sapienza University. Tom has been in Italy since 1991, working in architecture, cultural heritage, environmental and cultural sustainability and digital media. He was founder of the successful non-profit cultural travel association Scala Reale and continues to support culturally and environmentally sustainable travel as a partner in the Rankin & Greene. He cofounded the American Institute for Roman Culture, and served as its President until 2008. He now continues to be involved in archaeology and cultural heritage projects as Vice-President of The International Society for Archaeology, Art and Architecture of Rome.  Between 2013 and 2016 he directed the non-profit association Tevereterno Onlus dedicated to reactivating Rome’s Tiber riverfront through site-specific art installations, including Triumphs and Laments by William Kentridge.

Tom’s long experience in architectural and urban design in the US and Europe has included collaboration with Jorge Silvetti, Massimiliano Fuksas, Cino Zucchi, Charles Rose, and others. He currently directs the design research consultancy TRA_20, working on projects pertaining to environmental sustainability and urban design from his studio in Rome’s centro storico.

His academic commitments have included coordinating the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Rome Program in Architecture, overseeing architectural programming for the University of Minnesota Rome Program, teaching an English-language seminar on Ecological Urbanism at the University of Rome Engineering Faculty, and adjunct teaching positions for a number of Rome-based architecture courses.
